I can no longer be quiet about green smoothies

Believe me, I’ve tried not to talk about this.
But for the past month or so, I’ve been drinking a green smoothie every day…and I have become somewhat addicted, I’m afraid. I hate talking about it because–well, I’m all too aware that people (and by people, I mean family members) are rolling their eyes at me. I know what they’re thinking: this is just the latest of my little obsessions.
Okay, I admit that I do have obsessions. A few years ago, for five straight months I woke up every morning and ate half a can of pineapple. I can’t remember why this was a good idea, but it had something to do with getting enough chromium, so the pineapple had to come out of a can. Fresh pineapple, delicious though it might be, wasn’t an option. We had stacks and stacks of cans in our pantry. One day I decided I didn’t want anymore.
I’ve also had some hair issues (read: obsessions) from time to time. I’m the only person in our family with blond hair, and as anyone with blond hair can tell you, the color is NEVER precisely right. It’s always either too gray-looking (hairdressers call that “ashy”) or else it’s too gold (“brassy” to the professionals), and sometimes, defying all logic, it can be both at the same time. You can have ashy hair when you catch a glimpse of it in the rear view mirror of your car, and then the most horrifyingly GOLD hair in the bathroom mirror. When that happens to you, you NEED family members to assess and report on what THEY see. It’s difficult to keep them from backing away from you, though, when you attempt to explain what’s going on and impress upon them the importance of their evaluations. At times, they will run out of the room to escape your questioning.
And I’m not even scratching the surface of my health interests. For instance, I was once told by my yoga teacher that I am totally misaligned in ways that were going to lead to pain, bad knees and sloping shoulders–and so he recommended that I perform an exercise which involved lying motionless on the floor for forty-five minutes a day with my legs at right angles on a chair, and my head perfectly forward and my arms at my sides. Forty-five minutes of motionless lying about! I wasn’t even permitted to fall asleep, which would at least be a good use of the time, because then I would collapse myself into my old misalignments and grow even more crooked! And I couldn’t use the time to make phone calls or even watch educational things on television, because all you can really do when lying motionless on your back is stare at the stains on the ceiling.
But I did this–for a while, at least. My family members were quite amused. But no one joined me in this attempt to become a better aligned person. And now that I have quit doing it, they are polite enough not to bring it up again. It’s been filed away in the catalog of my oddities, I’m sure.
But this brings us to green smoothies. Despite what you might be thinking, green smoothies aren’t green TEA smoothies. They are green because that’s the color of the smoothie itself, since it it is chocked full of green vegetables. Like handfuls of baby spinach, to be exact.
What you do is take some frozen strawberries–a lot of them, but this is not exact science, so just put as many as you like–and two bananas and the handfuls of fresh baby spinach and you put all that in a blender along with some water, and then you turn on the blender to its best ICE-CRUSHING setting, and then watch as the whole thing turns a slightly horrible-looking green color.
A warning: You will not look at it and think, “Wow! I have GOT to drink that thing, because it looks so good!” But when you taste it…wow. It tastes mostly like strawberries, with some creaminess due to the bananas, and a kind of fresh, crisp taste from the spinach. It definitely does not taste like spinach, so you don’t have to worry about that. But when you drink it down–I have two large glasses of it every day–well, you can’t believe, frankly, that anything that bad looking tastes so WONDERFUL.
The best part of it is that just this blenderful of goodness contains, like, a bazillion servings of vegetables. You know how recently they decided that it wasn’t enough for us to get five servings each day, like they’d always been recommending, but that now we needed, oh, at least NINE? And I remember thinking, “Well, THAT’S never gonna happen!” But now I think I get nine servings just thinking about the green smoothie each day.
No, no. Here’s the really, really best part–and now you’re going to think I’m just bragging. The other day I went to the doctor, and of course they always insist on weighing you at the doctor’s office, no matter why you’re really there. Usually I try to ignore this aspect of doctorhood, because it’s just a quirk that they can’t help. But–holy smokes! I had lost FIVE POUNDS without even trying. Honestly. I still eat all the food I normally do, whenever I’m hungry. I’ve just added this green smoothie to the mix–and five pounds has somehow melted off without me noticing. (I feel that five pounds that leaves in April is worth about ten pounds any other time of the year, because this is the time of the year when a person is starting to think about the bathing suit problem coming up.) AND! I can take my jeans off without unbuttoning and unzipping them. In fact, I have trouble getting them to stay up! I’m actually going to have to buy a belt. I found out I lost two full inches in my abdomen, just from drinking green smoothies for five weeks. My stomach is flatter than it’s ever been.
So you can see why I can no longer keep quiet. Thank you, bloglily, for telling me about green smoothies being practically the National Beverage out there in California. And, by the way, does my hair seem ashy to you?

Hi, Sandi!
Congrats on the 5 lbs lost! I don’t believe in ‘obsessions’ (except the ones that compel you to do something that interferes with your daily life). If you like it, and it makes you feel good (physically OR mentally), dig in!

Can’t wait to try this!

Hi Sandi. Lily turned me onto these damn things while she was in Mexico and I’ve been drinking them ever since. I make mine different though. As a base, I use some fruit/veggie juice that I buy at Trader Joe’s (it’s green and has spirulina and other stuff in it). I also add a bit of kefir. Then, I add a ton of spinach, kale, collard greens and swiss chard. I finish it off with a little protein powder and some more green powdery stuff with lots of chlorophyll, spirulina, etc. Oh, and one banana. I eat it like soup, at my desk, and end up with about 3 small bowlfuls. Yummmy. I haven’t lost weight
but I feel very healthy and much more energetic, including in the afternoon. No more 3 o’clock blahhhhs.
I had to laugh at your obsessions though. You sound just like me with the hair (mine is blonde as well) and the food. I get on kicks where I eat the same thing every day and then, suddenly, it’s no longer appealing.
Finally, and as a p.s., I am Lily’s friend that lives in Santa Barbara. I think we’ve emailed before.
Bye now.

What if you don’t put the spinach in? I have a little gout issue and spinach is on my no-no list.

I was thinking “gee, I don’t know about this” until I read the part about the five pounds. Now I’m hightailin’ it to the grocery to stock up on spinach, stawberries, and bananas. I’ll report back

Sandi — Five pounds! That amazes me. On my moribund food blog, I have some photos of the smoothies I made with kale (which is just as good as spinach, and maybe better). They’re here: http://tiffintin.net/2009/02/07/green-smoothies/
And now I have to run out and buy some cans of pineapple.
And your hair? Lovely. Just like you.

I am sitting here drinking my first green smoothie, except its dark red with green flecks in it…could it be the cranberry juice? I’ve been taking a nutritional supplement for a month, mixing the powdery stuff with cranberry juice and adding in bananas or plain yogurt. Today, like Becca, I ventured into the produce section and bought spinach, then hiked to the other end of the store for the frozen strawberries. So, I mixed in 8 oz diet cranberry juice, 1 banana, 1 cup frozen strawberries, a few adult spinach leaves and the supplement powder. It actually tastes delicious!! Very thick, ice cold and yummy. Not sure if this alone will help with weight loss, but schlepping all over the Super Stop & Shop certainly has to count as productive physical activity…!

Five pounds…WOW!! I sure hope this works for me! (I have been dreading THE “bathing suit problem”!) Anything that can jumpstart the shedding of a few extra pounds sounds good to me. Then to top it off, strawberries AND spinach together in drink form…YUMMMM!!! (Yes, I’m serious about this…I love both!)
So, I just got back from Shaw’s with ALL of the ingredients for green smoothies. But, before I reached for the blender off the top shelf in my pantry, I decided to check your recipe one more time…I just couldn’t wait to try them and wanted to make sure I did everything right!
Well…that is, until I realized I bought FRESH strawberries, not frozen. Uuuggghhh! So, rather then jump back into the car to get the frozen variety, I have decided to pop the fresh ones I bought into the freezer and try this new taste sensation in the morning! I’ll let you know how it works out.
Thanks for writing your blog…I, for one, enjoy it immensely!

Sandi, you seem to have boosted the local shoreline economy in both the fresh produce and frozen food aisle!!! Way to go, doing your share to stimulate the economy, good health, and exercise!! Tonight I will try my smoothie according to the RECIPE (remember the old gals on the Waltons and their beloved recipe??) and leave out the cranberry juice, double the bananas, etc. Jill, how did you like it? Love your husband’s blog, what a talented writer!

Wow–I’m glad I wrote about this after all. Now we just have to see if everybody likes it as much as I do.
Katie, I agree with you about obsessions. Maybe that’s the wrong word: preoccupations might be better.
Nancy: do you think we can get Starbucks to make us some of these? We’re such good customers!
Debs: I love it that Lily got you drinking these, too. Yours sound VERY interesting, and probably much healthier. I’m going to have to try kale, too. I love collards, and kale is like that, right?
Karen, I think you could probably put any vegetable in that you wanted and it would taste wonderful. Can you eat other green, leafy veggies–or are they all forbidden?
Lily, yummm! I love the picture you posted.
Becca, I know you’re going to love it! I can’t wait to hear.
Gail, I don’t think there’s any thing wrong with putting cranberries in it. Love the idea of the red flecks, though. Makes the smoothie look much more dramatic.
Jill, see if Bobby starts taking them on Metro North with him!

I washed down two Krispy Kreme donuts with this tasty concoction. Haven’t lost a pound yet. I think I’ve been hoodwinked.

Just stumbled across this post. Have I become you? I’ve not posted for some time, well because I have more energy now that I’ve been drinking green smoothies, which means I’m not sitting in front of the computer so much. I hope to correct this little glitch soon though…as you can see I’m on the computer! Are you still going green? I’ve not got the whole family drinking – ah sweet victory!

I just stumbled onto your conversation here and though I realize it’s probably so far after the discussion, I wanted to add that I, too, have just started drinking green smoothies. A co-worker of mine brings one in every morning (her husband makes a big batch for thier family before work). One morning I was talking with her and asked what she was drinking. She told me and I took one look at it and said, No way… It looked so disgusting. But then she gave me a taste and I couldn’t believe how good and sweet it was! I stopped at the market on the way home and bought the ingredients I needed and have been making them ever since. Now, instead of reaching for snack foods during the day or at night, I make up one of my smoothies-guilt free! They’re so refreshing and energizing. I drink about two a day. Here’s how I make mine: pour a little apple juice in the blender, add about a fistful of kale, baby spinach and some fresh italian parsley. Then add frozen strawberries and half a frozen banana. Then I add two ice cubes and grate until the ice is fine-I like the crunchy/icy texture. I am hooked for life. Thanks for sharing your experiences, everyone, it’s encouraging to know I’m not the only “preoccupied” with these!

Hilarious! I must say, i can relate to your obsessions. My family just ignores me because I am always “up to something”. Nice to know I am not alone in this journey.
I too, am a green smoothie drinker. I lost 4 lbs my first week of just drinking a green smoothie for breakfast. This could also be due to the fact that I skipped breakfast.
Nonetheless, congratulations on the 5lbs (I am sure it’s more by now).

Ok – so this could have been me writing this blog. My family just loves me through my “obsessions” too. LOL. I’m 5’3, 236.8lbs, and I started drinking the green smoothies about 3 weeks ago. First it was get in one a day, then for the past week it was (2) meals a day of smoothies, and (1) meal whatever the heck I wanted. I deciede to go on a 6 week GS challenge with my teen dauhgter. We both have bi-polar and are really overweight. My reading said a vegan diet would help us with the bi-polar. Anywho… I weighed it yesterday to start the challenge, and guess what! I’m down to 230.2 lbs. Like you, I wasn’t even trying. So I’m excited and ready to see what will be in 6 weeks….

Undeniably consider that that you stated. Your favourite reason seemed
to be at the web the simplest thing to take into accout of.
I say to you, I definitely get annoyed even as people think about worries that they plainly do
not recognise about. You managed to hit the nail upon the top
and also defined out the whole thing without having side
effect , people could take a signal. Will probably be again to get more.
Thank you
