What a wonderful story! And I love seeing where you write. It's gorgeous. I'd like to have a screened porch someday.

I want your screened porch! I've just added it on to my imaginary dream-house. And, I agree, it's amazing how much drama there is when you sit quietly and observe. (Nature's drama is the best.)

No wonder your porch is such a good and inspiring place to write (besides what you and I, who are only accidental Yankees know about the inherent wonderful mojo of porches)--all that life and drama! Save me a seat and pour me an iced tea--I'm on my way over.

Nature humbles me, the way all these small dramas play out over and over while we are largely unaware.

On my drive to work I pass a lovely woodland pond, practically right in the middle of the freeway. There is one family of swans who live there, and during the past seven years I've watched several generations grow up. Circling off the exit ramp each morning, I love seeing them floating serenely out, starting their day as I'm starting mine.

I hope your little family of cardinals grows up without incident, and that you'll have the opportunity to see them take wing and fly :)
