End of November
Well, is there anything darker or more dreary than the end of November?
Right now it’s 59 gray, sodden degrees outside; for days the sun has been just a rumor in the sky. The leaves are all gone, and by 3 o’clock in the afternoon you would swear that night was already here.
I keep thinking […]

A day to write a novel
This date on the calendar has said WRITE 20 PAGES OF NOVEL for some time now.
That’s how far behind I am on my five-pages-a-day regimen, due to such interruptions as Thanksgiving and the laptop taking to crashing four or five times a day just for fun, and–oh, why not just admit it?–a certain ignorance of just […]

Scary hair, part 2
It turns out that there are lots of scary, puffy-haired ladies roaming the earth.
Charlie, passing yet another one today in a narrow hallway, was heard muttering under his breath as he made his way along: “She’s really very nice…she’s really very nice…”

Scary hair
We went to a restaurant last night, anxious to kick off our Thanksgiving detox diet with some Italian pizza, calzones, and eggplant parmesan–but wouldn’t you know, almost immediately there was an unsolvable problem.
Yep, we got a scary hostess.
At least that’s what Charlie said, and he is three years old and an expert on Things That Are Too Scary. He keeps a […]

A Thanksgiving thought
Let Go…
Let go today of worrying about the stock market.
Let go also of thinking about winter coming, the weather, ice on pavements.
Let go of the fears of people driving or riding in cars, electricity going awry, burglaries, reptiles taking control of the yard, trees falling on houses.
Take a deep breath and […]

Thanksgiving turkeys
Every year I order a fresh turkey from the turkey farm nearby, and go early on Wednesday morning and stand in a looooooong line with just about everybody in town and wait my turn to pick it up. We stand there in our fleece sweat pants and our flannel shirts and boots, stamping in the cold […]

Two little boys, overheard
Two little boys, appearing to be about nine years old, overheard talking outside the candy store window.
First boy: Yesterday I found a condom on the patio.
Second boy: Really? You did?
First boy: Yeah.
Second boy: What is a patio, anyway?

A Public Menace is born
My mother is 75, and adorable (as you can see) and in addition to these attributes, she’s recently decided to become a Public Menace. This, I’m convinced, is because she’s currently between men. This is a state of affairs she hasn’t had much experience with since it’s happened only a few times in her life. Usually […]

Aging ungracefully
Yesterday Salon magazine had a hilarious column called Old School, written by Debra Dickerson, standing up for the idea of just letting ourselves get old and wrinkled. You know, accepting it. After all, why do we have to still be trying to keep ourselves young all the damn time?
She writes:
Once I turned 47 last year, I […]

The slippery duvet
So I was talking to Stephanie last night on the phone.
(This character on the right is Stephanie on the day we took her to college. Notice the stylish luggage she has in the back seat, manufactured by the Glad Bag Corporation.)
After she told me how college is going (hard but okay overall), when she’ll come […]
